Pittenweem Community Trust (PiCT)
Update on Pittenweem Community Trust Ltd
Jan 2019 It is with regret that we are posting this - the directors have come to a decision that it is time to wind up the company. PiCT has not had the capacity to take on any new projects for some time now, and the ongoing costs of maintaining a business need constant fund raising efforts. PiCT has been responsible for two successful projects resulting in the Pittenweem having two very active charities which support the community in different but important ways. These are of course the Pittenweem Community Library and Information Centre and the West Braes Projects. And we mustn’t forget that PiCT’s original goal of saving local pubs has been successful, even if it worked out differently. So the members and directors of PiCT should be proud of their achievements including a huge amount of fund raising through markets, fayres, coffee mornings, auctions, and of course successful applications to local and national funders. With thanks to all the members and very best wishes for the future. |
History of the community trust in Pittenweem?
Early in 2014, a number of people on the Pittenweem facebook group started to exchange messages expressing concern about two of the three pubs in Pittenweem being up for sale, with one actually closing down. The "Save a pub for Pittenweem" campaign rapidly gathered momentum, and the group held its first public meeting on 26th February 2014. Over 40 people turned up, to hear about the Pub situation, watch a film about development trusts, and have a chance to question Tony from Tayport CDT. There was lots of enthusiasm for a Development Trust which could do all sorts of good things for Pittenweem, including raising money to save one of the pubs, renovating the open air pool, and lots of other suggestions. Since then, all three pubs were on the market, along with the village shop. This threat of closure of key local businesses has been a wake-up call for the people of Pittenweem to get together and do their best to maintain the character and vibrancy of our community. The Trust is working on issues that are close to the hearts of locals, but outside of the jurisdiction of the Community Council and other local bodies. PICT has seen the development of two projects which are now independently run by their own registered charities - the West Braes project - sea swimming pool and crazy golf area, and the Library, which was closed by Fife Council in Feb 2017 |
